Both Marlow Teams Advance in Basketball Regionals

by Elizabeth Pitts-Hibbard

After tough losses in the first round against Lexington, both Marlow teams have battled back to stay in regional competition. Thursday’s games against Marietta allowed the Outlaws and Lady Outlaws to advance to game 5 today in the consolation bracket. Wins today will put both teams within one win of advancing to area.

Maintaining a steady lead over Marietta was the key to the Marlow boys’ success on Thursday, scoring double-digits in all four periods. The Outlaws shot 16 for 24 from the foul line and sealed the deal with threes by Julian Marroquin, Jace Gilbert, Josiah Johnson, and Avery Payne.

Marlow boys are up against Jones at Jones; tip-off is at 3pm. The winner of Game 5 will meet the winner of Game 6 on Saturday at 3.

The Lady Outlaws overcame several deficits in their battle with the Lady Indians, finishing the first period down by four and the second down by seven. Their big push for the lead came after halftime when Dara Hunt, Elaina Kuhlman, and Korie Kizarr all put up threes – six total in the period – and Madison Fitzhugh sank two free throws, giving the Lady Outlaws 22 points in the third period against the Lady Indians’ 12. The Marlow girls were 15 for 21 from the foul line, versus Marietta’s 10 for 23.

Marlow girls will face Washington today at 1:30 at Jones; the winner will meet the winner of Game 6 on Saturday.
