Walmart to Require Masks in All Stores
Walmart announced on Wednesday that beginning Monday, July 20, shoppers in all stores will be required to wear a mask. In a statement, Dacona Smith, COO of Walmart, and Lance de la Rosa, COO of Sam’s Club said that the new policy is in response to face covering mandates be-ing implemented in communities throughout the country.
“Currently about 65 percent of our more than 5,000 stores and clubs are located in areas where there is some form of government mandate on face coverings,” the statement reads. “To help bring consistency across stress and clubs, we will require all shoppers to wear a face covering starting Monday, July 20.”
The company leadership said that they believe this is a “simple step” that all shoppers can take for their safety and the safety of employees.
In order to facilitate this change in policy, Walmart has created the position of Health Ambas-sador, who will be near the store entrance to remind shoppers of the mask requirement. “Our ambassadors will receive special training to help make the process as smooth as possible for customers. The ambassadors, identifiable by their black polo shirts, will work with customers who show up at a store without a face covering to try and find a solution.”
At Sam’s Club, the associates stationed at the entrance will remind shoppers that masks are required. Complimentary masks will be available to Sam’s Club members who don’t have one.
“We know it may not be possible for everyone to wear a face covering. Our associates will be trained on those exceptions to help reduce friction for the shopper and make the process as easy as possible for everyone,” the statement said.
The company said that in states and communities that have mask mandates, most customers comply with the requirements and bring a mask when they shop. They anticipate that will be consistent company-wide with the implementation of this policy.
“We know some people have differing opinions on this topic. We also recognize the role we can play to help protect the health and well-being of the communities we serve by following the evolving guidance of health officials like the CDC. We appreciate the understanding and co-operation of our customers and members in wearing face coverings to protect their safety and the safety of our associates.”
