Marlow Continues Historic Season with Victory Over Davis

by Elizabeth Pitts-Hibbard

The Outlaws continued their march into the history books with yet another district win on Thursday, this time over the Davis Wolves, 35-6. The 2020 Outlaws are only the third team in Marlow history to start the season 6-0, alongside the 1985 and 1987 teams.

The Outlaws again dominated the first half, beginning with quarterback Jace Gilbert’s 48-yard pass that found the hands of Will Bergner with 8:29 left in the first quarter. Gilbert’s point-after kick put the Outlaws on the scoreboard, 7-0.

After a quick passing game that put Marlow into scoring position just a few minutes later, Julian Marroquin took a 9-yard run into the end zone for the second TD of the quarter to take a 14-0 lead over the Wolves.

With just 25 seconds left in the half, another long bomb from Gilbert to Bergner – this time for 63 yards – put another TD on the scoreboard to end the half and send the teams to the locker room with the Outlaws up 21-0.

Bergner’s third touchdown reception came quickly in the third quarter with Gilbert’s 24-yard pass a scant three minutes into the period, making the score 28-0 after Gilbert’s point-after kick.

Avery Payne’s first touchdown of the game was a 29- yard run with five minutes left in the third quarter for a 35-0 score.

Defenses held both teams scoreless through the remainder of the third and almost through the fourth quarter, until Davis’s Jake Britt ran the ball five yards for the only touchdown on the home side of the scoreboard, with just 41 seconds left in the game.

With the 35-6 victory over Davis, Marlow stands firmly in the number-one spot in District 2A-4 and will continue the run to the playoffs this week.

The Outlaws have outscored opponents by a total of 96-0 in the first quarter this season and 144-14 in the first half. Marlow will host Marietta (1-0 in district play; 1-3 for the season) on Friday; kickoff is at 7:30.
