Sunshine OHCE calendar stays busy with training, barn quilt workshops and donation collections

by Sue Smith - Reporter for Sunshine OHCE

Sunshine OHCE met Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, at the Stephens County Fairgrounds in Duncan. Barbara and Bob Leverett were the hosts. Barbara gave a devotional from the book “Jesus Always” by Sarah Young reminding us God is in control. There were 22 members and 2 guests present. Guests included Mary Beth Mullica and OSU Extension Educator, Brenda Gandy-Jones. Mary Beth joined the group after the meeting.

Brenda Gandy-Jones discussed the Master Volunteer training recently conducted and encouraged those recently certified to sign up for the many service opportunities that will be available through OSU Extension and help with the 4-H clubs in the county.

Gina Flesher, the West District-South Region Representative for OHCE discussed plans for the upcoming District meeting scheduled for March 21, 2023. It will be held at the Quartz Mountain State Lodge near Lone Wolf. Everyone is encouraged to make plans now to attend. Ms. Flesher also reminded everyone of the upcoming fundraiser for the Charis Pregnancy Center which will be “Comedy and Coffee” to be held Nov. 15, at the Simmons Center. Tickets can be purchased in advance for a discount or at the door.

Barn Quilt Workshops held Nov. 4-5, were fun and informative. Classes were full or nearly full both days. It is interesting to note that a group of ladies, some from out-of-state, made this class a part of a girlfriend get-together and their completed barn quilts made in Oklahoma will go to Arkansas and Kansas.

Sunshine members brought 90 packages of peanut butter crackers/cheese crackers to be taken to Gabriel’s House to address food insufficiency in children. Following the meeting there was a lesson on soups presented by Barbara Leverett. She presented three soups for sampling.

A leadership training session was held beginning Monday, Nov. 14, for the officers and committee chairpersons at the Red River Technology Business Center. Lunch was provided. Committee planning was held in the afternoon, for all committee members.

The next meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Dec. 1, at the First United Methodist Church. This will be a potluck luncheon, members should bring their favorite dish to share. A family or two will be adopted to help with Christmas gifts for children. Please bring the children’s gifts unwrapped to this meeting. We will also play a game involving sticky notes, so bring some packages to participate.
