Staying Focused Key to Tournament Win for Marlow’s JH Varsity Baseball Boys Team
Game delays and a lot of waiting were the biggest challenges for the Marlow Junior High Varsity Baseball team at the recent Chickasha Middle School Tournament. But that didn’t stop them from winning the tournament champion title. The tournament was April 13-15 and this was the 2nd year for the team to win the tournament, said Coach Trevor Hudgens.
“They played really well, it was tough for a couple of days. When we got there, we had delays, sitting for one-and-a-half to two hours, which made it tough for them to focus,” Hudgens said. “I was really proud of them for staying focused and playing well.”
On the 1st day, they played Anadarko and won 14-6. In the semifinals, they kept Fort Cobb at 0, and the young Outlaws walked off the field with 7 points. The final game against Chickasha was similar, with a 6-0 win for the Marlow boys.
“Offensively we hit the ball well. Our pitchers were Avery Foster, Jake Pettit and Austen Harris. They did a great job throwing strikes. I tell those guys all the time, throw strikes and catch and you’ll win.”
Hudgens praised the teams his boys went up against. “It’s good competition up there. Chickasha has a good program and so does Fort Cobb. We played that team (Fort Cobb) earlier in the year and won 9-8. It was a competitive game and a really good team.” As for the wins, he gives the JH Varsity team all the credit. “They are a good group of kids and really talented. They want to get better, and it makes my job easy. Also, our junior varsity team, 7th graders, went to the Healdton Tournament and won that one.”
