DEWAYNE'S CORNER - FALL MEANS FOOTBALL ... OUTLAW FOOTBALL

by Dewayne Boyles

I remember Cheerleaders leading us at pep assemblies.

I remember Bon Fires!

I remember the Helmet car.

The horse and rider shooting a shotgun when Outlaws scored.

You remember the Outlaw Band playing "On Wisconsin"?

All that was most recent. Now let's go back to the early days. The ground where the Football Field/Rodeo Arena was part of John Medcalf's property around 1900-1912. We had wooden bleachers with a shed-type cover over them. First home game in 1917 against Chickasha, Marlow lost 6 to their 13. In 1917, we played Duncan. First win beating Duncan 65 to 0. We were called the Gray Wolves back then.

Senior class of 1925 met with Coach Jones Graves and voted to change mascot name from Gray Wolves to Marlow Outlaws after Coach told the story about the Marlow Brothers (George, Boone, Alfred {called Alf}, Lewllyn, Charlie).

In 1926, it was announced about a "new athletic center " with ticket sales to help pay for it. First game was in 1930 and field name was "Fair Park" which is now called Outlaw Stadium. It was not called Outlaw Stadium until 1956.

Then in 1936, WPA put up a fence with four arches at the east entrance to the stadium which still stands today. In 1952, the local Lions Club had a fundraiser and sold brooms to help support the football program. Other programs were the Booster Club members and fundraisers by different organizations.

The class of 1955-1956 takes credit for burning down the stadium in fall of 1955. Seems they had cleaned up after a game, put the garbage in a barrel and burned under the bleachers. They left after the fire was out (THEY THOUGHT) but flared back up hours later!

Three State Championships were brought home by the Fighting Outlaws as we have begun to be called. Coach Sevil Pickett (1959-1966) lead us to our first in 1959 and again in 1964. Only one other was brought home in 2021. From Coach Pickett's years came a Viking member from Marlow and who has two Super Bowl Rings - Terry Brown.

He returned to Marlow and ran a successful Sporting goods store. Terry currently is an Insurance Agent in Marlow. Terry Brown Boulevard is the street that is on the east side of Outlaw Field (between the stadium and the elementary school).

Marlow is one of a very few who have had a girl play on their teams. We had a young Beth Briscoe play on our junior team. A fast runner who also excelled in track, weight lifting and baseball about 1979.
