Marlow wins 37-14 against Chickasha; prepares to host Comanche tradition one more time

by Toni Hopper

Marlow’s home season opener against Chickasha resulted in a 37-14 win for the Outlaws. At halftime, they were up 21-0. Head Coach Matt Weber said going into last week’s game they would need to win the kicking game, and they did just that from the start. QB Cade Gilbert (2) scored that first touchdown and the Outlaws attitude going in was good and even better as the game progressed. A strong offensive line also factored into the overall win.

“After watching film, we were first happy to get a win. We want our guys to always be happy about a win because so much goes into it,” Weber said. “The great thing is our guys are aware we have lots of things to fix if we are going to become a good football team. In film session, many of our guys were able to “self-correct” before we even pointed it out.”

It’s that attitude and self-discipline that the team is building upon as they look to play a long-anticipated rivalry – the Comanche Indians.

“This week is a huge rivalry that we hate seeing come to an end. Their new staff is doing a great job with scheme and getting their kids to play hard. We know their bliss will be excited, as will ours,” Weber said.

While the two teams have played on and off over the last 100 years, Comanche will be exiting because of the size difference. Comanche is in 2A and OSSAA is splitting 2A, A and B classes into two divisions next year. Comanche falls into the smaller division of 2A, noted Jason McPherson. Marlow is a 3A school.

Another factor for this week has been the extreme heat temperatures in the triple digits.

“Anytime we have had extreme temps, we do as much as we can without helmets and really slow practice down. Temps are scary and not something we will ever take a chance with,” Weber said.

Friday’s game (Sept. 8), which starts at 7 p.m., is the 83rd meeting between Marlow and Comanche – the most times of any opponent. The first time the teams met was Sept. 19, 1924, in Marlow and that game resulted in a tie. The last time they met was Sept 9, 2022 at Comanche, with Marlow dominating the opponents field and returning home with a 62-0 victory. According to the stat sheet, Marlow has won the last 9 meetings and 14 of the last 15. They are 28-9-4 at home, and 28-12-1 at Comanche.

The two rival teams played every year from 1936 to 1981 (46 seasons). Marlow also has had the most wins (56) against any opponent when playing Comanche.

Comanche’s last win took place on their home turf, Sept. 16, 2011, C-14/M-8.

Coach Weber is 5-2 vs Comanche, with all those wins during his time over the Outlaws. Comanche’s Coach is Gary Robinson and it is his first season. His record includes 11 seasons as head coach, 59-38 in 9 seasons in Texas, and 3-7 last year at Grandfield.
