Marlow Outlaws lose to Sulphur, but ready for Plainview at home
With the 14-13 loss for the Outlaws at Sulphur on Friday, a school record of 18 straight October wins will just have to stay on the books - at least for a few years. It was the first loss for Marlow in an October winning streak, since Oct. 11, 2019. It also put Sulphur at a 10-9 all-time victory at home against Marlow.
The defeat happened in the 3[rd] quarter.
"Lost a close game to a very hot Sulphur team," said Outlaw Head Coach Matt Weber. "We thought our defense played well, but offense didn't play well. Sulphur had a lot to do with that so we give them credit. Still, we have to fix things we aren't doing well and that starts with me."
Neither team scored in the 1[st] quarter, and it was at the 9:48 mark when Marlow's freshman player Clint Ladon made a 7-yard run to put his team on the board 6-0. The kick was blocked. In the 2nd] quarter, Sulphur's Coy Myers scored with a 9-yard pass from Colten Cole, and a Cole kick was completed giving Sulphur the advantage 7-6 with .33 left on the clock. Marlow's Korbin Dittner (24), scored on a 43-yard pass from teammate Cade Gilbert (2), and Gilbert made the kick, again returning the lead to the Outlaws at 13-7. But in the 3rd] quarter, Sulphur's Maddax Mobly ran for 8, and Cole completed the kick, putting the team ahead by that one point.
The 4th quarter didn't produce any points for either team. This was the first loss of the season for the Outlaws. They return home Friday and will take on Plainview.
"This week is special since it is senior night," Weber said. "There is a possibility this could be the last home game our seniors will ever play at Outlaw Stadium. There is still so many playoff possibilities going into these last two weeks. These guys have logged a lot of hours in that stadium so we want it to be a special night for them."
Plainview and Marlow meet for the 14[th] time, with the first contest dating back to Nov. 23, 1991, giving Marlow the advantage of a 14-8 score with Marlow in playoffs. Marlow also won 40-7 against Plainview at Plainview, in the Oct. 28, 2022 battle, but the opponents lead the series 8-5. They have won 6 of the last 8 times against Marlow. The last time Marlow beat Plainview at home was Oct. 13, 1995, 27-21. It's anybody's game come Friday as they are 3-3 on Marlow's turf. Plainview coach is Joe Price.
"Plainview is always fielded a great team and it is much the same this year. They have a big physical running back and a couple receivers that are special. All our goals are still right in front of us and we look forward to the challenge," Weber said.
