Daughters of the American Revolution donate to Marlow Library

The Garland Smith Public Library in Marlow received a very special donation last week from the descendants of those who participated in the American Revolutionary War!

The Daughters of the American Revolution are direct descendants of anyone who participated in the Revolutionary War.

They donated four children's books to the library, all based on events and figures from the American Revolution.

The Daughters of the American Revolution have chapters locally in Lawton as well as Duncan, and they are currently seeking new members in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Revolution.

From fighting in the war to being a nurse to cooking meals for soldiers, members also had someone in their family who donated horses or made gunpowder.

It's way more than just those who fought in the war in the war.

This group does a lot to help our Marlow community.

They're often involved with local veterans and have helped raise money for the parks or collect school supplies for kids in need.

They do anything they can to involve themselves in the community.

They go to the cemetery and put wreaths out for local veterans and honor those who defended our nation in special ways for observances such as the 4th of July, Flag Day.

The Daughters of the American Revolution hold meetings monthly with a speaker and sometimes meals. For holidays they do something special for their meetings every year.

Their group does a yearly essay for grades 5-12. They are separated by grade.

The essay is entered in a local contest with a chance to win a scholarship. That contest can lead to a state contest and even further into nationals. They are also looking for more schools to participate. It is a great way to win a scholarship & learn about writing.
