New Year for Patio Garden Club
Summer break is over, not only for students in school, but for members of the local garden club.
First meeting of the new club year was held at 1 p.m., on Sept. 12, in the Garland Smith Public Library.
“We meet September through May and then dismiss for the summer months (June through August),” explains Mrs. Bettie Cooper, who serves as president of the club. “That allows everyone time for family vacations, or various other activities.”
Hostesses for the meeting were Darla Muller, Mallary Burch, and Penny Cameron. They served a variety of delicious fruits, fresh pastries, cookies and iced tea and water.
Mrs. Cooper called the meeting to order and a devotion was presented by Mrs. Cricket Holland.  Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as well as the treasurer’s report.
As roll was called, members were asked to mention something they did during the summer months. Those in attendance were Dina Atnip, Suzanne Buckley, Penny Cameron, Bettie Cooper, Annette Davis, Janel Domurat, Judy Hawkins, Cricket Holland, Kathy Malcom, Darla Muller, Erin Nash-Jones, Debra Tupin, Debbie Wortham and guest Ariel Burgess.
Members are asked to bring their yearbooks to each meeting. If forgotten, they pay one dollar into the Penny Pine Program fund that’s used to purchase trees.
Announcement was made of an upcoming Environmental School on Oct. 7-8 with a cost of $55. For the first time, the school will be by means of “zoom” only.
“We had a couple of projects during the summer. We trimmed trees along Broadway in Marlow and repainted and repaired the sign for Redbud Chapel located in the park,” she informed the group.
“We are often asked to help with community projects and are glad to be a part of making our town look beautiful,” she added.
“We also help beautify the walking trail at Central High by planting bushes and flowers along the pathway.”
Other announcements were: The annual Soup and Chili Supper will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the fellowship hall of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Marlow; members voted to have their Christmas meal at noon on Dec.12, also to be held at the church.
Dina Atnip presented the program entitled “Your Trashy Footprint”, making the group aware of the many ways we waste water, food, energy usage, clothing and other “stuff.”
Everyone in attendance took the personal eco-footprint calculator quiz to discover their personal footprint.
“According to the ecological group, the average footprint in the United States is 25,” she said. (I took the quiz and my score was 18.4. Anyone wanting to take the quiz can do so at: WWW.myfootprint.org)
Some of the daily routines discussed in helping decrease our footprint were to turn off the water while brushing your teeth, catching rain water, and using paper instead of Styrofoam.
“We all have little habits that could be changed and help improve our environment,” she added.
Next meeting will be attending the South Central District Meeting with time and place to be announced later.
