AmVets Post 11 to Host Chili Cook-Off, Book Signing to Support HVAC Fundraiser
February 12, 2026
A night of chili, camaraderie and community support is on tap later this month as AmVets Post 11 hosts a special fundraising event aimed at improving its facility for local veterans and their families.
On Friday, Feb. 21, AmVets Post 11, located at 126 S. 10th Street in Duncan, will hold a Chili Cook-Off beginning at 5 p.m. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the post’s ongoing HVAC campaign, which is focused on upgrading and maintaining the building’s heating and air conditioning system .
Organizers say the improvements are essential to ensuring the post remains a comfortable gathering place year-round for veterans, their families and community members who utilize the facility for meetings, activities and special events.
Admission to the cook-off is $10 at the door . Those who think they have an award-winning chili recipe are invited to compete, with no entry fee required . Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners , adding a friendly competitive spirit to the evening.
In addition to sampling a variety of chili recipes, attendees can take part in a 50/50 raffle , giving participants another opportunity to support the fundraiser while potentially taking home a cash prize.
The evening will also feature a special appearance by Purple Heart veteran and author Matthew Sims, who will be on site for a book signing of his 2024 book “Why My Heart Is Purple”
Sims earned three Purple Hearts while serving as Combat Medic “Doc Sims.” He lived through the Iraq and Afghanistan battlefields answering cries for help.
The signing offers attendees the chance to meet the veteran, hear about his experiences and purchase a signed copy of his work. Organizers hope the addition of the book signing will make the event not only a fundraiser, but also a meaningful opportunity to honor and connect with those who have served.

AmVets Post 11 Commander Betty J. Wood said the post depends on community support to continue its mission of serving veterans and promoting Americanism . Fundraising events such as the chili cook-off help ensure the facility remains a welcoming and functional space for current and former service members.
