James Beaty (May 12, 2024, age 72) McAlester, OK

Funeral services for James Beaty, 72, longtime managing editor for the McAlester News-Capital have been announced.

Beaty, a Hartshorne native, died unexpectedly May 12, 2024.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Brumley Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne.

His funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the Hartshorne Elementary School Gym/Activity Center with burial to follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Hartshorne.

Beaty, who reported for the News-Capital for more than 38 years, died May 12, 2024.

His career earned him several state and national awards for his reporting.

His weekly Ramblin’ Round music column was a favorite, with his writings making their way onto music forums across the globe.

Beaty was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2017.

He is survived by his wife, Sheri, and daughters Breanna and Shera Beaty.
