Glenda (Varnell) Mackey (1949-2023) Marlow, OK
Glenda (Varnell) Mackey ascended to heaven went to be with our Lord on June 12, 2023, at the age of 73. Glenda was born on November 21, 1949, in Sayre, Oklahoma. ll are welcome to join in a service celebrating Glenda's life at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, at the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow, Oklahoma.
She excelled in sports as a youth as a track and field star before earning Oklahoma All-State honors in basketball as a defensive specialist at Sayre High School.
On April 3, 1969, Glenda married the love of her life, Gary Mackey. This decision blessed her beyond her wildest expectations as the love, devotion, and faith of the Mackey family glorified her until her final breath. Gary and Glenda moved to Marlow, Oklahoma, in 1975, and have made the Marlow community their home ever since. Glenda's love of sports continued into adulthood as she played intermural basketball and softball in the Marlow /Duncan area for many years making lifelong friends along the way.
Many of her weekends and evenings in retirement were enjoyed watching her grandchildren play softball and basketball. Glenda's sewing skills were unrivaled. Her family and friends regularly looked to her to mend, alter, and create clothing. She worked at the AOA/EBI durable medical equipment factory in Marlow for over 30 years forging some of her closest relationships. Meme, as most of her grandchildren called her will be remembered for her strength. Not only was she strong in character but her friends and family steadily referred to her as the strongest human they know.
Glenda is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Gary Mackey, a son, Shawn Mackey and his wife Karen of Buffalo, New York, a daughter, Jennifer Kowalik and her husband Nathan of Marlow, 3 sisters (Rosanna, Janis, and Sheila), a brother (Ed), 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
