Letter to the Editor: Central High youth learn about safety on the road

April 04, 2024

On March 26, 2024, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Central High Public Schools and Oklahoma Farm Bureau Safety Services presented a Student Driving Safety Course to the Central High students. Stephens County School Resource Deputy Daniel Carroll led the instruction. Trooper Darin Carman was scheduled to speak about DUI enforcement but was called away to an emergency.

Topics included the legal aspects of driving including responsibility and consequences and driving techniques as well as school policy. Students experienced wearing “beer goggles” which mimic the effects of alcohol on vision.

Mr. Burton Harmon represented Oklahoma Farm Bureau and spoke to the students about losing someone close to him as a result of drinking and driving.

The end of the school year brings excitement with students, staff and parents. Pending proms and graduation ceremonies bring safety concerns to the minds of school staff and parents as well as law enforcement. We want to give the students and parents every opportunity to enjoy this time and return home safely.

Thanks to all involved for a job well done!

Sincerely,

Rick Lang, Undersheriff
